Welcome toThe Archive
Here you will find an assortment of audio files selected from my personal music library archive. All the audio was produced during my 13 years working for KUOP Public Radio. Much of the audio found here was recorded and produced in the KUOP production studios with the assistance of Pacific students. As always, the pride of the university exists within the skills, talents, achievements and success of Pacific students. Throughout my career at Pacific, it has been the students for which I have been honored to teach and serve.
KUOP 91.3FM
KUOP 91.3FM Stockton/Modesto (originally KCVN) began broadcasting from the University of the Pacific in the Fall of 1947. At that time, it was financed and built by the College of Pacific which then became the University of the Pacific. It was the first FM stereo radio station on the West Coast, and one of the first 200 stations invited to join the newly established National Public Radio (NPR) network back in 1971. Broadcasting at 30,000 W from Burns Tower  it served the Stockton community. In 1983, K UOP’s transmitter was relocated to Mount Oso in Stanislaus County. Now at an elevation of 2800 feet with a 7000 W transmitter output, KUOP broadcast radius covered most of the Central Valley.
KUOP Productions
From 1987 to 2000, I was the production director for KUOP  Public Radio, 91.3FM. Besides operating, producing, and managing our 2-track broadcast production studio (Studio C) and our two multitrack recording studios (Studio A & B), I was in charge of the production department which provided audio support for the station. Using the assistants and  talents of Pacific students working at the station, recording projects and on air promotional materials were created, recorded, and broadcast throughout the Central Valley. This included recording and producing local concert series such as the Stockton and Modesto symphonies for on air programing, live studio performances for on-air show hosts, station IDs and underwriting announcements for marketing, and the creation of original promotional radio spots for the membership campaigns (see below). In addition, I was responsible for providing recording studio production services to individual clients and artists throughout the Central Valley.
The KUOP Membership Campaign
In the Fall and again in the Spring, for 2-weeks KUOP staff  would break in to the regularly scheduled programing throughout the day, trying to encourage listeners to support the station by becoming a member. In order to break up the constant on air fundraising chatter, the production department was directed to produce original promotional announcements to motivate and entertain the listeners. Each campaign had a theme and the production department would produce promos related to that theme.

All these public radio promos were produced in the 1990s when KUOP broadcast from the University of the Pacific. At that time the station was equally funded by the University, KUOP listeners, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, CPB. It should be noted, in the current political climate the need for well-balanced journalism and free speech radio broadcasting is no longer possible. With the elimination of CPB, the last commercial-free media outlet is gone.

Here are a few KUOP station jingles and fund drive promos that were produced for a variety of on air membership campaigns. All of them were created, recorded and produced by the KUOP production department student staff (see below).

KUOP Recording Studio Projects
The KUOP recording studios were comprised of five attached rooms that housed an analog 4-track, an 8-track, and a 2-track broadcast radio production studio. Studio A was a 4-track, 10-inch Otari reel-to-reel recording studio with a Tapco 12 x 4 mixing console. The room was roughly triangular with a short doorway passage, with a glass window overlooking KUOPs full size recording, and live broadcast sound studio with baby grand piano. Studio B, the main recording and production studio (formally the 8-Trak analog recording studio) was similar in shape as the 4-track studio and also overlooked the live broadcast sound room. However when Studio B was upgraded in the mid 90s, a 16-track ADAT system with BRC (Big Remote Control) and a Mackie 24 x 8 mixing console was installed. The fifth room was the Studio C announce booth that was in between Studio C and Studio A. The announce booth was also used as a drum booth as it shared windows with Studio A and Studio C, the broadcast radio production studio. All these rooms were part of KUOP Productions for which I operated and managed

Home Studio
In 1991, the Home Studio program hit the KUOP airwaves. This 1-hour multi-genre format provided local and independent musicians, public radio broadcast air time throughout the Central Valley. The Home Studio program was the first public radio program in the nation that featured original home studio produced music created in small format home recording studios. Hosted by Jeff Crawford, the program aired on Monday evenings from 9 – 10pm.

Below you will hear some of the incredibly creative music sent to the Home Studio program. All the music was transferred from CD and is presented here without any audio processing. (Unfortunately, the cassette Home Studio library was discarded when KUOP moved to Sacramento.)

Only the CD album title, along with the track name will be shown. As you listen, keep in mind that Home Studio aired its last broadcast in the Fall of 1997. All the tracks presented here were recorded before that time and represents some of the most innovative and independent music produced in local home studios.

It should be also noted that today, roughly 30-years later, some of these home studio artists maybe successful songwriters, music producers, and stage performers. Regardless, it was KUOP’s Home Studio program that may have provided first exposure and the motivation for all of them to pursue their musical career.

Please note, all the Home Studio intro themes were recorded directly onto cassette, post radio broadcast signal.
